BEFORE ARRANGING AN ASSESSMENT
Separate the engine symptoms from the drive fault
Tell us whether the engine continues running normally
when the machine stops moving. Include the make, model,
operating hours if known and any recent belt, linkage
or transmission work.
Explain when slipping or noise occurs, whether forward
and reverse behave differently and whether you have
noticed a leak. A photograph of the identification
plate can help establish which transmission is fitted.
Avoid continued use if movement is unpredictable,
a leak is visible or the noise is worsening. If the
machine cannot be moved easily, discuss access and
transport arrangements before booking. The proposed
work and costs are explained before repairs are
authorised.
For a mower with additional starting or cutting-deck
problems, our
ride-on mower repair guide
covers assessment of the complete machine.

Gearbox and drive repair FAQs
Why does my mower engine run but the mower will not move?
+
A worn or broken belt, adjustment problem,
control linkage or transmission fault can
prevent movement. The machine design matters.
Share the make and model, whether the engine
still runs normally and whether any drive
remains in forward or reverse.
Ask about loss of drive ↗
Does a slipping mower drive mean the gearbox needs replacing?
+
Not necessarily. Belts, controls and internal
transmission components can produce similar
symptoms. An assessment helps establish
the cause, available parts and likely repair
scope before replacement is considered.
Discuss a slipping drive ↗
Can I keep using a machine that makes a new gearbox noise?
+
Stop using it if the noise is worsening,
drive is unreliable or fluid is leaking.
Continued operation may increase damage.
Describe when the noise occurs and whether
it changes with speed, direction or load.
Request a transmission-noise assessment ↗
What details should I send about a gearbox fault?
+
Include the machine make and model, operating
hours if available, the affected drive
function and when the fault appears. Mention
recent repairs and whether the machine can
still be moved. Photos can help explain the
issue, although inspection is needed to
confirm the fault.
